Fire Safety Tips to Use in the Workplace

Here are some of the fire safety tips that you should use in the workplace.

No matter where you work, there are going to be potential fire hazards. Fires can have devastating impacts on people and their properties. As such, preventing such fires is of vital importance, and this means following proper fire safety procedures. Here are some of the fire safety tips that you should use in the workplace.

Identify Fire Hazards in the Workplace

To prevent fires from arising in your workplace, it’s important to identify where fires could potentially start. Common areas may include electrical equipment, power strips, lighting equipment, heaters, and cooking appliances. When you know where fires begin, it’s easier to know where fire safety precautions need to be taken.

Learn the P.A.S.S. Method of Using Fire Extinguishers

While prevention is the best fire safety method, you need to be prepared in the event that a fire does arise. Fire extinguishers are great fire safety tools that help combat fires in the workplace. To use these extinguishers properly, you should follow the P.A.S.S. method, which is comprised of four steps:

  1. Pull: pull the safety pin out. This allows the fire extinguisher to discharge.
  2. Aim: target the base of the fire with your fire extinguisher. This is where the fuel supply is located, making it the most effective place to target when trying to neutralize a fire.
  3. Squeeze: squeeze the trigger of the extinguisher. This will release the extinguishing agent that helps to control the fire.
  4. Sweep: sweep the nozzle of your extinguisher back and forth along the base of the fire. As the fire goes down, try moving towards it cautiously while continuing with the sweeping motion

Know Which Industry Needs are Relevant to Your Business

Different industries have different fire safety regulations. As such, you need to know what local, state, and national regulations you must follow to keep your business safe against fires. A code-compliant building is vital for minimizing the likelihood of fire emergencies.
