Here is what you should do whenever you’re testing your smoke detectors.
Every home is going to need some smoke detectors. Smoke detectors are pivotal for fire safety within people’s homes and businesses. You need them to function optimally so that they work during emergency situations. To ensure that these smoke detectors are working properly, occasional testing will be needed. Here is what you should do whenever you’re testing your smoke detectors.
Do Some Preparation Prior to Testing
Before you start testing your smoke detectors, everyone in the building should be aware of what you’re doing. You don’t want anyone to go into a panic when they hear the alarm go off. You also might need to get a ladder or stool so that you can reach your smoke detector, depending on how tall the ceiling is. Lastly, make sure your smoke detector is securely in place before you start testing it.
How Often Should You Test Smoke Detectors?
Generally, it’s good to test your smoke alarms on a monthly basis. If you haven’t encountered any problems with your detectors, get the batteries changed every year. With that said, you’ll need to change the batteries if you hear your detector making a recurring beeping sound. If you have any smoke detectors that are ten years or older, you’ll want to replace these smoke alarms because older ones are more prone to malfunctioning, which can put your building in serious danger.
Testing Your Smoke Detectors
When testing your smoke alarms, you want to push and hold your detector’s test button. After a couple of seconds pass, you should hear the alarm go off. Once the alarm goes off, you should release the button.
If the alarm doesn’t go off, see if the detector needs new batteries. Once the batteries are changed, try testing again. If your alarm still doesn’t work, you might need to replace the entire smoke detector.
