Different Classes Of Fires And What Extinguisher To Use

Different Classes Of Fires -- What You Should Know

Here are the key facts everyone needs to know when it comes to classes of fires and the type of fire extinguisher you need to use to battle the blaze effectively and efficiently.

There are a variety of types of fires that can occur. It is super important to know which type of specific fire is burning, so you know which type of fire extinguisher you need to use to extinguish it effectively and efficiently. There are a variety of different fire extinguishers, and they are all tailored to battling a wide array of fires. As a result, the class of fire will dictate which fire extinguisher you need to use to make sure that the fire is extinguished successfully. Here are the key facts everyone needs to know when it comes to classes of fires and the type of fire extinguisher you need to use to battle the blaze effectively and efficiently.

The Different Classes Of Fires

There are five different classes of fires:

  • Class A: When it comes to this type of fire, these happen to be fired that burn solid materials like wood, paper, and cloth.
  • Class B: These types of fires burn flammable liquids or gasses.
  • Class C: These are the fires that come from live electrical equipment.
  • Class D: Class D fires will be the ones that burn flammable metals like potassium and magnesium.
  • Class K: One of the most common in commercial buildings; these are fires that end up burning from cooking oils like the ones used in fryers.

The Various Types Of Fire Extinguishers

One of the most cost-effective ways for people to fight a Class A fire is to use a water based extinguisher. These will come in four different types: water jet, water with additives, water spray, and water fog. As a result, there are a lot of things to consider when it comes to knowing which fire extinguisher you need to have on hand and which one to use. Water jets will work by ultimately spraying a jet of water at the fire to then drown the fire and prevent any other ignitions. However, water extinguishers with additives are different and have special foaming chemicals added in them. They then make the water lose the surface tension it has to ultimately seep into the fire’s fuel a lot more effectively and efficiently. When it comes to water spray extinguishers, however, they use a very fine spray of water droplets. And finally, water fog extinguishers use water in the form of a mist, or fog. It’s the droplets with this specific fire extinguisher that are a lot smaller than those from any of the other water-based fire extinguishers.
