Fire Alarm Maintenance Procedures

Fire Alarm Maintenance Procedures

Make sure your fire alarm is well maintained by following these maintenance procedures.

If you have a fire alarm in your business, you understand how important it is to keep up with all of your maintenance procedures to ensure everything is functional if an emergency arises. A fire alarm is imperative to the safety of everyone in your building, so you need to be sure it works in the event a fire breaks out.  If you take good care of your fire alarm, it should last you around twenty years before you have to replace it. Make sure your fire alarm is well maintained by following these maintenance procedures.

Consider the Age of Your Fire Alarm

Your alarm will have specific maintenance requirements, and these requirements vary with the age of your alarm. That’s why you should determine how old your alarm is before you do anything else.

For alarms that are between 5 and 10 years old, there are many environmental factors that can cause parts of your alarm to break down. Failures can occur due to things such as voltage, humidity, and even the temperature.

If your alarm is between 10 and 15 years old, you will need to perform maintenance, but they should still function properly. If your alarm is any older, you will need to undergo extensive maintenance to keep it running. At that point, it may be time to consider replacing your fire alarm.

How Do I Maintain my Fire Alarm?

You should always be testing and calibrating the sensors of your alarm. Your manufacturer should have given you the specifications for your particular alarm. You’ll have to do some research, however, because you have to know about sensors, failure modes, and any requirements for re-installation before you can test your fire alarm.

Test your Fire Alarm Every Year

While your manufacturer should have given you their guidelines, a general rule of thumb is to test your alarm every year. There are some agencies out there that may ask you to test more frequently, so be aware of whatever guidelines are in place for your jurisdiction.
